It began innocently enough one day two years ago.
Brian Frank, of Dubuque, was sitting at home, playing the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game on his Playstation2 in front of his 3-year-old son, Korey.
As Korey watched his father perform amazing tricks with the simple push of a button and flick of a joystick, he became enthralled. Before long, he was asking his father questions about the game.
First, he asked if the sport was real, Brian said. Then, were the characters real?
When the answers came back 'yes,' he was hooked.
Brian logged into YouTube and after a few skateboarding highlight videos, Korey was ready to give the sport a try.
"I used to skateboard when I was 12 and still had (a skateboard) around," Brian said. "He found it in the garage and he was in the house messing around with it, pretending to do the tricks he saw in the video game."
It progressed from there, and Korey got deeper into the sport. One day, Brian noticed Korey doing some tricks and asked him where he learned them.
"He said just by watching the video game," Brian said. "It's very impressive. You've got the little 5 year old kid that's learning
tricks that I'm not even aware of. He doesn't even know what the tricks are called, he just sees their feet position and posture and imitates it.
"It's insane."
Two years later, and Korey has picked the sport up and improved so quickly that at the age of 5 he already has an equipment sponsor (The Dark Slide) and picked up a new clothing sponsor just last week.
